Then we move to the controversial intersection of politics and history. But first a Northwest News disclaimer: we scour newspapers, television networks, and online magazines for articles of interest to folks around the Pacific Northwest. Then we collect snippets of articles (below in italics) from our fellow reporters for you to enjoy. Audrey Magallon pleaded guilty to five criminal charges involving theft and computer fraud as her victims, from Port Townsend, Wash. and New Zealand, told their stories. Clatsop County Circuit Court heard Magallon, 31, pretended to be pregnant while simultaneously scamming two couples for money to pay for a "baby" – which didn't exist. Judge Paula Brownhill sentenced her to two years probation and 20 days in jail, with credit for time served. She was ordered to pay about $10,000 in restitution to the victims. The judge added several conditions, including staying away from surrogacy programs, not using the Internet and complying with all other rules set by her probation officer. From a despicable crime we turn to heated criticism of omni-politician Sarah Palin by a Seattle political columnist. The seattlepi.com's Joel Connelly takes on an excerpt from Palin's latest book, in which she targets both Levi Johnston, the father of her eldest daughter Bristol Palin's baby, and John F. Kennedy. Writes Connolly: But Sarah Palin's commentary on JFK helps demonstrate the depth of shallowness in one with possible aspirations to Kennedy's job. Palin takes out after a defining Kennedy speech, the 1960 appearance where the Catholic presidential nominee discussed separation of church and state before the Greater Houston Ministerial Association. Kennedy's speech "essentially declared religion to be such a private matter that it was irrelevant to the kind of country we are," declares Palin, and Kennedy "seemed to run away from his religion." The whole speech is online at American Rhetoric but here's an excerpt: "So it is apparently necessary for me to state once again -- not what kind of church I believe in, for that should be important only to me -- but what kind of America I believe in. I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute; where no Catholic prelate would tell the President -- should he be Catholic -- how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote; where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference, and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him, or the people who might elect him. I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish; where no public official either requests or accept instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source; where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials, and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all."
