Posted: 23 Nov 2010 10:38 AM PST Published: Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 8:47 AM Updated: Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 11:03 AMMaybe we're jaded but we think that people who fake cancer for money are heartless. We've got a few headlines this morning about folks who scammed their neighbors and loved ones by pretending to be dying of a painful form of cancer. Apparently, the scam is all the rage these days in Canada. And we've got an update for Amanda Knox-watchers. But first, a Pacific Northwest News disclaimer: we scour newspapers, television networks, and online magazines for articles of interest to folks around the Pacific Northwest. Now, onto Vancouver's daily tabloid, The Province, reports that four Canadians this month have been charged with faking cancer to raise money. Oh, Canada! On Friday, a Victoria-area woman was accused by police of fraudulently collecting $300,000 to pay for bogus cancer treatments. Tina Michele Sammons, 37, told her family and friends she was suffering from brain cancer, police say. Sammons, an American, claimed to suffer from brain cancer. Among the rogue's gallery of other Canadians in court in November for faking cancer: a 21-year-old woman in Ontario who claimed lung and stomach cancer, a 39-Ontario man who pretended to fight terminal brain cancer, and a 23-year-old woman near Toronto who plucked her eyelashes and tattooed WONT QUIT to her knuckles. Shame. Our next headline comes from Perugia, italy, where Amanda Knox has spent the past three years in prison. This week she wants to returns to court for a second chance at freedom. The American student's appeals trial opens Wednesday in this Medieval city, with lawyers hoping they can use new evidence to clear her in the killing of her British roommate. There's a risk: If her conviction is upheld, she could face an even harsher sentence. Lawyers for the 23-year-old Knox are seeking a full review of the case, and will try to introduce new witnesses. In December, Knox was convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering Meredith Kercher, and sentenced to 26 years in prison. She has always maintained her innocence.
