And it's a good day for the slightly less lucky person who will walk away with $250,000 from the Idaho Lottery. For the rest of us, at least it's Wednesday. Welcome to Pacific Northwest News. If you're new here, here's how things work at Northwest News: we scour newspapers, television networks, and online magazines for articles of interest to folks around the Pacific Northwest. Then we collect snippets of articles (below in italics) for you to enjoy. So read up, click over and then come back and share your thoughts with your community here on OregonLive. We appreciate remarks that are on topic and in good taste. We begin with a story for anyone thinking about inviting a dog into the family this year: You might want to visit the Marion County Dog Control and Shelter, which has been overwhelmed by nearly 30 stray dogs since New Year's Eve. The Statesman Journal reports that holiday fireworks may have led to the increase in strays: The shelter took in 25 dogs Monday with several more Tuesday for a total of more than 40 dogs in the shelter. That's unusually high, said Sonya Pulvers, the office manager at Marion County Dog Shelter. The influx includes a litter of nine puppies found in a box, Pulvers said. Most of the stray dogs are Labrador retrievers, terriers, beagles and pit bulls, but there also is a pug among the strays, she said. Interested? Act quick: some of the dogs may go to dog rescue programs but the shelter does euthanize, so if you're ready for a canine companion from Salem, don't delay. From dogs we turn to soldiers. The Tacoma News Tribune reports that court martial proceedings begin today at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for an Oregon corporal charged in connection with an assault against a fellow soldier at Forward Operating Base Ramrod in Afghanistan:Emmitt Quintal, 22, of Weston, Ore., could be discharged from the Army, spend a year in prison and lose two-thirds of his pay if he's found guilty. He's also accused of violating a general order by keeping images of Afghan casualties. He's one of 12 soldiers in the 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division who are accused of various crimes they allegedly committed at Forward Operating Base Ramrod. Five are accused of murdering three Afghan civilians between last January and May. Quintal, who was reportedly troubled by alleged wrongdoing in his platoon, cooperated with the Army war crimes investigation, according to TNT. That's all for today.
