Nooooooooooooo.

We here at Pacific Northwest News don't claim to be sports fans but we are able to identify the professional teams of the region and their notable athletes. So we celebrated from afar when the Portland Trailblazers nabbed center Greg Oden and boo hooed when he suffered not one but two major knee injuries.

And now, from a too-short spell on the mend, Oden's back on the sidelines with another season-ending knee injury. The Oregonian's Jason Quick explains what happened, but first a Northwest News disclaimer: we scour newspapers, television networks, and online magazines for articles of interest to folks around the Pacific Northwest. Then we collect snippets of articles (below in italics) from our fellow reporters for you to enjoy. So read up, click over and then come back and share your thoughts with your community here on OregonLive. We appreciate remarks on topic and in good taste.

Now back to Oden:

A ligament in Oden's left knee is damaged, to the point where it will require season-ending microfracture surgery.

It was numbing news for a franchise that once had dreams of Oden leading them to an NBA title. His size and athleticism led many to rate him a "franchise-changing" center, and the Blazers swiped him up with the No.1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft.

But since that June day when fans danced and chanted Oden's name after the pick, there have been only sprinkles of dominant play amid downpours of discouraging health issues. We've thought it before and we think it again: Get better soon, Greg.

That won't be enough for the O's sports guru John Canzano:

Enough sitting around, waiting for Brandon Roy to be healthy and for Oden to make a miracle recovery. ...

This Oden thing is done. Close the door. But I'm hopeful the Blazers know what needs to be done next.

Hmmm. From basketball we turn to the matter of that contested U.S. Senate race in Alaska.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that a tally of write-in votes for Senator Lisa Murkowski appears to be enough to call the Nov. 2 race in her favor over candidate Joe Miller:

The Associated Press and the state Republican Party called the race for Murkowski on Wednesday, with the Alaska GOP asking Miller to stand down. "We call on Joe Miller to respect the will of the voters and end his campaign in a dignified manner," chairman Randy Ruedrich said in a prepared statement.

But the Fairbanks Republican -- who staggered the Murkowski camp by winning the party primary in August -- said he's not conceding.

The Miller camp has called the state voting system "suspect." It's challenging the count in court and says the state Division of Elections has not complied with its request to review "voting tapes" from the ballot machines that record the votes cast.

Stay tuned for more developments on the election.
