Note from the Editor: On a flight from LA to NY I sat next to a lovely man named Chip Thomas who I found out was from the band PaperDoll. He was on his way to a tour in China and quite excited until he realized mid-flight that his trip wasn't going to be as easy as he originally planned and he might have to live up to the "drummer never showing up on time" cliche. He continued to e-mail me updates of his journey and was kind enough to take those e-mails and turn them into a piece for everyone to read.

Check out first entry below…

Chip's odyssey to Shanghai

Thursday, October 7th, 4:15pm PST: I have done the red-eye from LAX to JFK more than a dozen times this year, but this particular trip was different. I was flying to NYC with four hours to spare before my flight to Shanghai the next morning. My plan for those few hours was to:

  1. Meet, kiss, and hold my six-day-old niece (Lila James, who is the new love of my life!)
  2. Pick up my amazing Dream cymbals from the studio for the tour (there was no way I was heading to Shanghai without them!)
  3. Pack for the four weeks we will be in China.
  4. Sleep for 60-90 minutes (or maybe just five…)

Before waiting on the security line at LAX, I had the pleasure of meeting and bonding with the multi-talented Mali Elfman. We quickly realized we worked in the same industry and were separated by only one row on our same flight. A nice man let us exchange so we could sit together. A few glasses of champagne and wine later, we got to talking business. Mali is truly an entrepreneur and amazing person, owning her own online magazines, an actress, and film producer. I have a feeling we will be working together in some capacity very soon

About an hour prior to landing, I decided to flip through my passport to see where I had been the last year. China, Ireland, Mexico, Canada – not bad for 12 months. I came to my Chinese Visa from the band's last tour, just 2 months ago; immediately I realized that the visa was only good for one entry to the country! My mind raced through all of the necessary steps that would then need to happen: cancel my flight, plead for a new visa at the consulate in Manhattan, book a new flight – even cancel a show at the World Expo in Shanghai!

Friday

At 9 a.m. and there was already a huge line at the Chinese consulate in Manhattan. Fortunately, a friend who works for the U.S. consulate in China helped me to expedite the process. After 90 long and cramped minutes waiting, I was told my visa would be ready by 2pm. Problem #1 solved… but Problem #2 proved to be more difficult. I decided to take a risk and head to LaGuardia airport, in hopes of sweet-talking a ticket agent into getting me on a flight tonight. It didn't work. There were no available flights until Sunday, and everything had been oversold. They booked me for Sunday, though, so I headed back to the city in yet another $40 taxi ride.

Sunday

At 6 am, I made the trek back to LGA. At the counter, I immediately got a frown from the attendant. "Did you purchase your ticket?" she asks me. My heart stops. I quickly learned that my travel agent reserved the Sunday flight but had forgotten to actually book it. After an hour of pleading, I put my head down and headed back home, AGAIN. They scheduled me for a Tuesday morning flight, which meant that we would have to cancel our opening show at the World Expo. I couldn't help thinking of the old stereotype: The drummer is always late! (Fortunately, I found out a few days later we were able to reschedule the two shows to later in the month.).

Tuesday morning to Wednesday evening

I made it!
