The move aims to hold on to target readers who are now spending more time on the Internet and on digital gadgets, as well as expanding its readership into younger generations.

GM Multimedia's assistant vice president for marketing Suebwong Kaewthipharat said the company was planning to launch a digital magazine next year. It would still be called GM Magazine, but would be developed for access by iPads and other tablet devices.

Later this year, it will introduce AR technology into four magazines: GM Magazine, GM 2000, GM Watch and GM Biz.

AR technology will be embedded in the cover pages of each magazine and in some pages inside the magazines as well, starting with next month's issue.

Suebwong said the AR technology would enhance the reading experience. Instead of being restricted to text-based content and looking at still photographs, the AR technology will allow readers to explore content in multimedia format from links in the paper-based magazines.

"For example, instead of reading an interview in text format, with AR code readers can watch video clips of the interview or see behind-the-scene clips of the interview. This will add value to our paper-based magazine and help create a multimedia-leadership position for our magazines in the minds of our readers."

Suebwong said AR technology would help to increase revenue from the magazines as it added more multimedia features, enhancing both the content and advertisements.

As well as embedding AR technology into paper-based magazines, GM Multimedia has created two new websites, one for men - www.gmlife.com - and the other - www.womenplus.com - for women.

The aim is to develop the websites as online magazines with dynamic content, and to create an online community to build brand loyalty for GM Multimedia's products, both online and offline, physical and virtual.

"People are spending more time on the Internet and are consuming information from digital gadgets. We see an opportunity to tap into this and get closer to our potential readers by using technologies - including the websites, AR technology and digital magazines - to enhance our core competencies," Suebwong said.
