The New Economy Initiative has contracted Issue Media Group to launch a new website to tell the stories of local entrepreneurs.

The site at www.semichiganstartup.com will track more than 400 new Michigan companies, telling their stories to show the diversity of new businesses in Michigan and inspire other entrepreneurs.

NEI has a $100,000 contract with Issue Media Group to develop the website and to do stories on entrepreneurs in Southeastern Michigan for the next year, said Karen Goldbaum, communications officer for the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan, which is one of the initiative's 10 foundation funders and administrator of it.

"Startup is really serving as a hub for entrepreneurs to learn about other startups, and features, whether it be a story or a section with profiles, about companies or resources that can help them," she said.

The site will provide some resources for entrepreneurs, but won't replicate the comprehensive, entrepreneur resource system — the Statewide Entrepreneurship Support System — that NEI is developing with Detroit-based Digerati Inc., Goldbaum said.

The New Economy Initiative, a $100 million effort launched by 10 foundations to revitalize Southeastern Michigan's economy, envisioned the website as a way "to put a face on entrepreneurism in the area," Goldbaum said.

Saginaw-based Issue Media Group publishes the online magazines Model D, Metromode and Concentrate.
