Mary Corey, 23-year veteran of the newspaper, to head newsroom for both print and online

BALTIMORE, May 20, 2010 -- The Baltimore Sun Media Group announced today the appointment of Mary J. Corey as Senior Vice President/Director of Content for The Baltimore Sun, effective today. In this role, she will oversee the editorial content for the Baltimore Sun's newspaper and digital platforms. She is the first woman to be responsible for all newsgathering and editing functions at The Baltimore Sun in its 173-year history.

"Mary Corey is a talented, experienced journalist, with significant knowledge of Baltimore and the surrounding region," said Timothy E. Ryan, Publisher of The Baltimore Sun. "She is an exceptional leader who brings out the best in her team of reporters, designers and editors."

Mary has more than 23 years of experience in reporting, editing and newsroom management. She joined The Baltimore Sun in 1987 as an editorial assistant and was quickly promoted to features writer. From there, she became Assistant National Editor and National Correspondent. She then served in various editing roles in the features department from 1998 to 2003, and was promoted to Assistant Managing Editor, Features. During her six-year tenure in that position, The Baltimore Sun received numerous first-place awards from the American Association of Sunday and Features Editors, and she served as a Pulitzer Prize juror for feature writing. She was also instrumental in developing online strategies including the creation of blogs, web-exclusive content, videos and photo galleries.

In 2009, Corey was promoted to Head of Print and under her leadership The Baltimore Sun produced some of its best local reporting, including the resignation of Baltimore's mayor, the effect of two record-breaking snowstorms and the Ravens playoff run. In February of this year, she led the launch of three new print sections that are popular with both readers and advertisers: Health & Style on Thursdays; the newly revamped Live! tabloid on Fridays; and Business & Jobs on Sundays.

"It's a privilege to build on The Baltimore Sun's tradition of excellence and to move full speed ahead to ensure that the content we create is the most compelling and innovative across all platforms. The Sun's long-standing mission of delivering news and information to Marylanders about their world is more vital than ever, and I'm determined that our dedicated staff excel in that realm. That means relying on the enduring values of journalism and seizing new opportunities to reach readers," said Corey.

Corey received her Bachelor of Arts degree Magna Cum Laude from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 1985. Corey grew up in Cockeysville, Maryland, attending Dulaney High School. She is currently a resident of Baltimore City.

The Baltimore Sun Media Group, a Tribune company, publishes The Baltimore Sun, baltimoresun.com, 30 community newspapers and magazines, and a growing portfolio of targeted print and online products, including b and bthesite.com. In print and online, the Baltimore Sun Media Group reaches 1.2 million readers each week in the Baltimore area, making it the region's most widely read source of news and information.
